Healthy Home Project – 3 Years in the Making {Plus a Video Tour!}
We’re building a healthy home!!
We don’t have control over everything pertaining to our health when we are exposed to the outside world.
Chemicals fall from the sky and are emitted from automobiles and industry. We’re sprayed with them most every time we walk into a public building, along with mold spores for that matter. And we’re under the constant assault of electromagnetic fields in pretty much any area of civilization these days.
This is why we practice a lifestyle of detoxification along with only eating organic foods and applying natural products to our bodies.
But when you think about it, we spend just as much if not substantially more time in our homes than we do in the outside world.
And in our homes, we have near absolute control of what we’re exposed to… if we’re intentional about it.
Our homes can either be one of the healthiest environments we live in or the most toxic. Ask yourself:
- Is the air in our house pure and clean or are lungs and bodies being used as filters?
- Are we using all natural cleaning and personal care products or are we exposing ourselves to chemicals every time we wash our hands or do the dishes?
- Is our home a safe haven from EMFs or are we blasting ourselves with a wifi router and tons of wireless devices?
There is so much we can do to make almost any existing home a healthy home. It’s why we created our Healthy Home Checklist to help families identify and remove all potential sources of harm to their health.
But now we’re taking it a step further.
We’re building our healthy home from the ground up to be in absolute control of our family’s environment.
It’s been three and a half years since Ryder was diagnosed with cancer.
What has driven us ever since that day has been:
- Removing and reversing all contributing factors to the cancer in the first place.
- Reversing damage done from conventional treatment.
- Protecting him and his baby sister from any new insults to their health.
This house will be the capstone to this mission.
So we’ll be surrounded by the healing power of nature whenever we’re at home, not just when we make it out on a hike.
It’s also away from any cell phone towers or neighbors wifi routers. Our EMF meter picks up readings in most neighborhoods no matter inside or out of a home. Not ours. Zero reading.
We’ll be posting about everything specifically we’re doing to build this home as we go but for now, note the term “building biologist.”
Building biologists are experts in healthy buildings! Most consult on new construction and existing homes.
There is a lot to take into account and between everything we’re doing for Ryder and Channing, The Stern Method, Ryan’s day job, and working with parents of children going through cancer, researching every detail of every material was getting very overwhelming very quickly.
This is why we were so glad to have found Andy Pace of The Green Design Center. Andy is one of the most notable building biologists in the country… and he’s awesome… and he’s been a TON of help with making all these decisions in a way that doesn’t break our very limited budget.

Any knowledge or experience with EMF shielding pants or fabric that can be installed behind drywall that work to reduce exposure from outside sources?

Wow, that’s quite a project! I have never built a house, only renovated, decades ago, and it took us five long years b/c we did everything ourselves, so I know how it is to live in a construction zone. It’s going to be interesting to see your end product! Good luck!

Does your HVAC system filter out nanoparticles? Desperately trying to find something that does this, as nanoparticles are dropped on us daily through chemtrails. All the supposedly “best” filters I’m finding only filter out bigger particles.
Thanks for your question, K. Nanoparticles measure between .001 – .1 microns in size. They are usually a chemical (gas) and are difficult to capture with any HEPA air cleaner. HEPA is at 97% at .3 microns, yet when you get down to these gas sizes then we would need to use ozone to break them down or adsorb them into carbon. The ozone breakdown time on a nanoparticle would depend on the type of nanoparticle that it is. I don’t know what airplane chemical trails are made up of, yet I would bet that it is difficult to break down and that carbon in a bypass HEPA or RS4 would be highly effective. In this particular project, we are using the carbon matrix. Feel free to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.
Hi Andrew, thanks for your message. The chemtrails are made from heavy metal nanoparticles (aluminum, barium, strontium, etc) + viruses, bacterias, and more than is unknown at this point. Can you link an air purifier that can remove these contaminants from indoor air?
Great job guys! Looking fab! We just completed a similar new house project, and also used safe coat products at the recomendation of our green Home consultant. We used their sealant, wall paint and stains. I’d be curious to hear what your consultant recommends for insulation since wool was too costly. Blown cellulose I’m guessing… also what water filter and hvac system did you use? I REALLY need to know! Thx!
Nice to meet you Caroline…. I dont make blanket recommendations on products. Every product I do recommend is based on the project, the client and the particular Degree of Green we are trying to achieve for them.

Can you share the manufacturer of your home and windows?
I would like to know if you have a whole home air purification system in your home or one you would recommend? You mentioned you had an air exchange. We are needing to install new flooring and already have an air exchange but want to incorporate a really good air purification system that would take out not only mold, mildew etc., but also any vocs. None of our hvac contractors seem to know much about this unfortunately. My son is in remission from twice diagnosed leukemia, now a year and a half out from a transplant and it seems Formaldehyde can cause, specifically, AML, the leukemia he had. I have found more filters etc., along with a UV light. Not sure if they really work or not. Thanks for any and all advice!!
Hi Jo, so glad your son is in remission and you are doing everything you can for him! yes we do have an air purification system in addition to the exchanger. It’s the solas Rs4. Hope this helps!
Did you do anything to inhibit growth of mold (Stachybotrys, Apergillus, Wallemia, etc) ?
